Brand photography loses its value when images from different shoots do not match. A product that looks warm in the spring catalogue and cool in the autumn one creates visual inconsistency that undermines the brand. Here is how colour profiling prevents that problem.

What a colour profile actually is

A colour profile in this context is a saved set of Capture One adjustments: white balance, tone curve, saturation by channel, and shadow/highlight recovery settings. It is built from the first shoot using a colour checker card and calibrated against the client's existing brand palette. Once saved, it is applied as the starting point for every subsequent batch from that client.

Why the first session is the reference point

The first session is where the profile is built. We shoot a colour checker card under the same lighting conditions as the product or portrait work, then use that card to build a camera-specific correction in Capture One. The result is a profile that accounts for the specific camera body, the specific lighting setup, and the client's brand palette simultaneously. Subsequent sessions use the same lighting setup and the same profile.

What this saves in practice

For a marketing team that books quarterly brand shoots, a locked colour profile removes the re-briefing step from every session after the first. There is no 'can you make it warmer, like the last batch' revision round. The batch arrives matching the previous one. For clients who manage multiple agencies and need photography to match other visual assets, the profile can be calibrated against a provided reference image.

Limitations and when it does not apply

Colour profiling works best for controlled studio conditions. Outdoor and event photography involves variable light that cannot be fully profiled in advance. For outdoor work, we use a consistent post-processing approach and flag any significant deviations in the proof sheet. Architecture photography uses a different calibration process because the light sources are mixed and change through the day.

How to set it up

The colour profile setup is included in the first commercial session fee. There is no separate charge. After the first session, the profile is saved to the client file and applied automatically to every subsequent booking. If your brand palette changes, we rebuild the profile at the start of the next session. The rebuild takes approximately 20 minutes of editing time.
